How To Remove a Kirby Vacuum Head

People love their Kirby vacuums! However, after a while some people feel like it just isn’t picking up like it used to. The most common reason is that the head was not taken off properly! Why would you ever need to take the head off? Well, you might need to change the belt, you might need to attach the hose, or you might be shampooing your carpet. Whatever the reason, you’ll want to take it off correctly. In this video we show you how!

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

The first thing you’ll need to do is raise the head up to the highest setting.

Then lift the lid.

You’ll see two green arrows lined up on the front. Turn the belt lifter until the two red arrows are aligned. If you don’t do this, you will have problems later! Never take the head off if the red arrows are not aligned!

Now, release the head.

At this point you can do whatever it is you need to do. When you’re done, it’s time to put the head back on.

Start by making sure the red arrows are still lined up.

If you look at the back of the head you’ll see two hooks. These hooks go on the bar on the vacuum.

Hook the head on the bar and pivot it up.

Latch it in place.

Turn the belt lifter so the green arrows are aligned.

You’re done! You can get back to vacuuming!

If you notice a sudden drop in vacuum power, you might have forgotten to turn the belt lifter to red before removing the head. When you do this the belt falls off and is disengaged. If this happened, don’t worry! We will show you how to put the belt back on.

Begin by taking off the bottom plate. The belt will just be hanging.

Use one hand to hold the belt tight against the brush roll. With the other hand turn the belt lifter to red to grab it.

If you look inside you’ll see that the belt is now stretched and hooked inside. Go ahead and replace the bottom plate and it is ready to be put back on your vacuum! Once it's attached, spin the belt lifter to green. Crisis averted!
