How To Choose A Commercial Vacuum Cleaner

One of the questions we get asked a lot is “How do you pick a GOOD commercial vacuum cleaner?” In this video, Dustin tackles that very question!

The bad news is there are a ton of vacuum distributors out there that make commercial vacuums that really aren’t commercial. They just take a residential vacuum, add a three-prong cord, and slap “commercial” on the front. If you buy one of these it could very well be dead within a few months. For a vacuum cleaner to be truly commercial it needs to have been designed that way from the ground up.

The vacuum in this video is a commercial vacuum we sell a lot of called the ProTeam. This particular model is the XP-15. It has onboard tools and an extra-wide head to make cleaning simple and fast! We sell a lot of these to professional house cleaners because they’re lightweight, reliable, and have a 5-year warranty.

There are three things your commercial vacuum needs to have. The first is: simplicity! You may not know who is operating the vacuum and what their technical skill level is. Simple vacuums leave less room for error. This ProTeam can go from hardwood to carpet with the flip of a switch.

The second thing you need is a long, durable, three-prong cord. A typical residential cord is 20-30 feet in length, but we like to see commercial cords that are 30-50 feet. They should be extra thick, in case you run them over (we’ve all done it.)

The third thing is dependability! Can it stand up to all the hard use it’s going to get?

This room is carpeted with commercial carpet, which is low-pile. Most residential vacuums don’t do well on low carpet like this.

Now, you’ve heard us say not to use a residential vacuum for commercial use, but the other way around is fine. You can use a commercial vacuum for your home! We have lots of customers who use these at home because they’re lightweight, dependable, have HEPA filtration, and work great on pet hair. It has extra-large tubing since it was designed for commercial use, so it doesn't clog with hair very easily.

How To Buy A Vacuum Made In The USA

Oftentimes, people in their 30s start to look back at how many vacuum cleaners they’ve owned in the last 10 years and then they start to think about all the money they’ve thrown away. When this happens, we get emails looking for guidance on how to buy a high-quality vacuum that will last for many years. This is what we specialize in – vacuums that last decades instead of just a few years!

Here’s a picture of what our trade-in room used to look like. These are all vacuums that customers had traded in! Looking through the pictures you’ll notice that there are hundreds and, unfortunately, most of these end up in landfills. They are made in China for $20-30 and are designed to be disposable. It’s great for the vacuum manufacturers, but not great for the consumer!

Every 2-3 years you’re spending more money to get a vacuum that doesn’t work that well. If you were to invest in a good, high-end, American-made vacuum, you could expect them to last 20-30 years and they have the added bonus of cleaning better. This translates to huge savings and an improved cleaning experience!

We actually contacted many of the manufacturers about recycling these old vacuums, but it costs them less to just make new ones in China and ship them over. It is a "good" business model, but not one we believe in.

If you've gone looking for a high-end vacuum you may have noticed that they’re more expensive than the ones you find in big box stores. To help this cost, we actually buy used vacuums, rebuild them, and then sell them with our own 5-year warranty! This way you can get a high-end vacuum without paying an arm and a leg! Here you can see a bunch of the brands we sell.

So how do you buy an American made vacuum cleaner? Start by going to our website – www.greatvacs.com – and use the search option. In this video Dustin searched for the generic term “vacuum.”

On the left you’ll see all these different options you can filter. At the bottom you can see “Made in U.S.A.”

Select that and you will get a bunch of different vacuum cleaners that are made in the U.S.A. Use these options to further narrow down what you’re looking for! And that’s how you can find a good, made in the US vacuum cleaner that will last you for many years and save more money.

Miscellaneous Kirby Vacuum Attachment Functions - Tips & Tricks

Kirby is a high-end vacuum clean, and as such it can actually do a lot more than most people know about! In this video we go over a few things that most people never figure out!

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

First, let’s see how you can use your Kirby to clean the tops of your ceiling fans! Start by putting both wands on.

Then add the curved wand.

Finish it off with the wall tool. The shape will allow to easily reach the top surface of the ceiling fan from the floor!

The next fun trick is vacuuming your mattress! Take note that the longer the hose the more power you lose. If you want to do some serious deep cleaning, you’ll need to put on the hand-held tool. Start by removing the handle. (There’s a release at the back of the vacuum.)

Snap on the “hand held tool.”

And then snap your Kirby bag in place.

Instead of having the hose on you’ll actually have the head on for maximum cleaning power. Simply turn it on and you can vacuum your mattress, stairs, or anything else that needs a really good, deep clean.

What if you have all hardwood floors at home? A lot of people prefer a canister vacuum over and upright. With the right selection of wands and attachments, you can turn your upright Kirby into a canister vacuum!

Did you know your Kirby vacuum can blow air? It can be used as a leaf blower, inflator, or for dusting things like a keyboard! The first thing you’ll do is remove the bag.

Now remove the hose.

Then take the hose and line up the arrow with the notch on the vacuum. Twist the hose and it should be securely attached where the bag used to be.

There is another attachment that you’ll need to place on the front where the hose was.

Another cool thing your Kirby can do on the blow setup is shampooing carpets! Just have it set up to blow and add on the shampooer attachment.
