My Kirby Won't Turn On! Safety Switches and Other Common Problems

Are you having trouble getting your Kirby vacuum to turn on? Today we go over a few common problems that may keep your Kirby from working the way it should.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

If your Kirby vacuum isn’t turning on, the first thing you’ll want to do is check the safety switches. We’ll start with the one behind the power nozzle.

Start by releasing the belt.

Now release the latch.

When you take the powerhead off, you’ll be able to see the safety switch.

When you put the head on, a small tab will press this safety switch. It should be sticking out about half an inch or so. If it looks short or has a jagged, broken edge, then you tab is probably broken and isn’t engaging the safety switch. The solution is to replace the power head and we can help you with that! Just email us at service@greatvacs.com with more details.

If your tab looks good, you’ll want to be sure you’re attaching the head properly. There is a bar on the vacuum and two hooks on the power head. These hooks will need to hook over the bar.

Raise the height of the vacuum all the way to make it easier, then attach the head.

Secure the latch and engage the belt. The power head should only have a slight, 1-2 mm gap. If yours looks like the one pictured above you should be good!

The next safety switch is by the bag. If you remove the bag, you’ll notice this tiny switch on the vacuum.

There is a tab on the bag that pushed the switch forward when attached properly.

For the bag to be attached properly it will need to be aligned on the three brass tabs.

Set the bag on the tabs and turn clockwise until you feel it lock into place.

If any of these tabs are broken the bag may not engage the switch. Also, if you notice the bag is popping back out of place too easily that could be a sign something is worn out and needs replaced.

If you’ve checked your safety switches and those all work and it’s STILL not turning on you should check the power cord. Unwind the cord and try wiggling it around as you attempt the turn the vacuum on. If the vacuum turns on at some point you likely have a short in the power cord. If that happens send us an email at service@greatvacs.com and we can help replace the cord.

How to Replace a Kirby Vacuum Hose End

Is your Kirby tool hose not attaching properly to the vacuum body? It may be due to a broken or worn out Hose End. Today we show you how to easily replace that old end piece.

Tools

  • Needle nose pliers

Instructions

The first thing you will want to do is inspect your hose end. Check the long tab that engages the safety switch, the two hooks, and the three slots inside. If any of those are damaged, you will need to replace your hose end.

To remove the old hose end take your needle nose pliers and grab the rubber lip on the inside.

Then twist to the side. This will create a gap.

Now, push the needle nose pliers further into the gap and twist more, until the rubber lip folds in on itself.

At this point you can take your other hand and press up on the hose end while you press the other direction with the pliers and they should come apart.

To get the new hose end on you will do the same thing. Take your needle nose pliers and twist the rubber part.

Hold the rubber piece with your hand and slide the new hose end over it.

Once it’s on you’ll notice that the rubber piece is still bent.

Simple take your finger and press it back out! You’re done!

How to Change a Kirby Vacuum Bag

Is it time to replace the bag in your Kirby Vacuum? Confused on where to start? Today we’ll go over the different styles of bags and how to change them on your vacuum.

“G” Style Generic Bag

The first step is to unzip the outer cloth bag.

Then pull out the fill tube to expose the inner bag.

Simply detach it from the fill tube!

Throw the old bag away and get your new bag. We will start with a generic bag, which has tabs as shown above.

You need to push the bag on until it goes past the tabs on the fill tube.

You may find it helpful to grab the bag by the top of the connection piece.

As you’re putting it on, give it a good twist and it should go on all the way. Once it’s on just tuck the bag back in the outer cloth bag and zip it up!

“G” Style Genuine Bag

If you’re using a genuine bag you’ll notice that it has tab slots. These make installation a breeze!

Just line the tab slots up with the tabs on the fill tube, push it on, and twist!

“F” Style Genuine Bag

Unzip the outer cloth bag and pull the inner bag out. You’ll notice that the F series has a tab. Since you’re throwing this bag away it’s fine to rip it off.

We’ll be starting with the genuine Kirby bag, which fits all models.

The tab on the top of the connector helps it fit the F series vacuums by folding over the clips on top of the fill tube.

Push the bag onto the fill tube, make sure the bag goes past the clip on the bottom, then fold down the tab on the top. Then put the inner bag back into the outer cloth bag, zip it up, and you’re good to go!

“F” series Generic Bag

The generic bag works with the same concept as the genuine. Start by pushing it on.

Then make sure the bottom clip goes over the bottom of the bag connection. Then tuck it away and zip the outer bag up. You're ready to get back to vacuuming!

How to Replace a Kirby Vacuum Pivot Assembly

Is the transmission on your Kirby vacuum not engaging at the right time? Is your pivot broken, or is your handle not staying up like it’s supposed to? Then this is the video for you! We go over how to replace and properly adjust the pivot assembly on all G models of Kirby Vacuums.

Supplies

  • Pivot assembly
  • Torx bit driver
  • T15 torx bit
  • T20 torx bit
  • T25 torx bit

Instructions

First, disassemble your Kirby vacuum.

Once disassembled, you need to get the black cover off the back. Use the T15 bit and remove the screw for the cord holder. As you’re removing the screws set them in a safe location and remember which ones go where.

To remove the screw by the on/off button you need to switch to a T20. Remove the black cover and set aside.

Now, moving to the front of your Kirby vacuum, lift the lid. There are two screws holding on the main body cover. Use the T20 bit to remove them.

Move back around to the back and, using the same bit, remove the two screws that are holding on the main body cover.

Once the cover is removed there are two T25 screws holding in the pivot assembly. This is a great opportunity to tighten the screws if needed, or replace the pivot assembly.

On the back left side there is a little slot that has a tooth in it. Take that out and just like that, you can take your pivot assembly out.

Once you have the old pivot assembly out you can replace it with the new one.
Slide the new pivot assembly in, remembering that there is the slot that the tooth needs to go in.

This is important! As you’re putting it on, there are holes that you need to center directly above the screw holes. If it is too far forward or back it won’t allow the transmission to engage properly. We recommend just hand tightening the screws and then finishing with the T25.

Now, reinstall the main body cover. Switch out your torque bit with the T20 and replace the four screws that hold the cover in place.

Slide the black cover back into place over the cord holder. There is a slot for it to slide into. The screw to hold the cord holder in place is the smaller black T15 screw.

Finally, replace the larger black T20 screw at the bottom. Congratulations! You’re done.
