How to Test a Central Vacuum Power Head

If your Power Head isn’t turning on, you can usually diagnose the problem by following the easy steps in this video.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

You will start by unplugging the pigtail cord from the end of the hose. Take the other end and plug it into the outlet.

Now take the end that had been plugged into the hose and plug it into the two-prong on your power head. Then turn it on.

If your head turns on the problem is in the hose. If the head does NOT turn on, then the problem is with it. If this is the case, send us an email at service@greatvacs.com with more detail and we can help you get the replacement parts you need.

Tools

  • Phillips head screwdriver

Instructions

Start by flipping you GV power head over. There are 10 screws that you need to remove. Set them aside in a safe place!

Once the screws are removed, flip the power head back over and remove the top cover.

There is a plug that connects to the headlight that you can unplug to give yourself more room, but it’s not necessary. In this video we leave it plugged in.

There is a screw on each side of the pivot assembly that need to be removed and set aside.

Once those are removed you can lift up the pivot assembly and then slide the pivot out.

Grab your new pivot and reverse the process! Slide it into the pivot assembly.

Replace the screws. If you unplugged the headlight make sure to plug it back in.

Put the top cover back on.

Flip it over and replace the 10 screws. You’re done!

Tools

  • Three-way adapter cord

Instructions

Whether you have a direct connect GV power head or a two-prong corded GV power head, we will show you how to test it to make sure your problem is not in the hose or wand.

To test the direct-connect power head, start by plugging the three-way adapter cord into a working power outlet. Then take the two-prong plug and connect it to the top of the direct-connect. Turn the power head on to see if it works.

To test the corded two-prong power head, you will again need to plug the three-way adapter into a working outlet. Plug the appropriate plug of the adapter onto the two-prong plug of the power head. Finally, turn the power head on to see if it works.

If you try this test and the power head turns out, you know the problem is in your wand or hose. If this is the case send us an email at service@greatvacs.com.
