For years the Kirby vacuum has been king of vacuum cleaners. As far as cleaning power and durability goes, Kirby vacuums have built a strong reputation over decades.
Dyson has become one of the most recognized bagless vacuum brands. Its technology and modern design made it a popular competitor, which is why we decided to compare these two systems.
We performed detailed tests to compare both vacuums. Instead of focusing only on appearance, we tested different areas including airflow, cleaning ability, durability, filtration, accessories and usability.

Test #1 - Best Vacuum Not To Clog
Clogs are caused by small suction tubes and sharp corners inside vacuum systems.
During our comparison, we found that the Kirby suction tube design was significantly larger than the Dyson tubing, allowing more airflow and reducing the chance of blockage.
- The first used Dyson we received as a trade-in was clogged.
- Long pet hair can create clogging issues in some bagless vacuum systems.
- No vacuum is completely impossible to clog, but tube size and design play an important role.
Test #2 - Most Airflow And Vacuum Power
Why This Test Matters
A vacuum's purpose is to remove dirt that cannot be seen. Suction power and airflow are important measurements when comparing cleaning performance.
- Kirby Motor Size = 7 amps
- Dyson Motor Size = 12 amps
For this test, an airflow indicator meter was used to compare the performance of both vacuum systems.
Test Results
Dyson: The suction meter reading was 1 out of 10 when tested through the hose.
Kirby: The suction meter reading was 7 out of 10 when tested through the hose.
When connected directly to the vacuum system:
- Dyson measured 2.8 out of 10.
- Kirby measured 10 out of 10.
Test #3 - Great Suction When Full Of Dirt
One of Dyson's main claims is maintaining airflow as the vacuum fills with dirt. We tested this claim by comparing both vacuum systems under different conditions.
Dyson Testing

- Dyson filled three-quarters with dirt

Test #4 - Which Vacuum Cleans Better
For this test, we used a controlled carpet cleaning comparison.
Equal amounts of dirt and sand were placed on both sides of the carpet. Each vacuum was then tested using the same process.
Results
Dyson: Picked up approximately 40% of the dirt.
Kirby: Picked up approximately 75% of the dirt.
The Kirby was also able to remove additional dirt left behind after the Dyson test.
Sand and deep dirt can damage carpet fibers over time if they are not removed properly.
Test #5 - Durability
The Kirby vacuum is built using a metal construction designed for long-term durability.
The Dyson uses a lightweight plastic construction. While plastic does not automatically mean poor durability, the material and design differences affect long-term reliability.
Shipping Durability Comparison
- Kirby requires less protective packaging during shipping.
- Dyson requires additional protection because certain plastic components can be more vulnerable during handling.
