How To Use A Kirby Vacuum Zipp Brush Attachment

One question we get asked a lot is “How do you use a Zipp brush properly?” In this video Dustin shows you how it’s done!

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

To use your Zipp brush you first want to attach your Kirby hose. Then you’ll want to attach the Zipp brush to the hose.

We are using a white Zipp brush in this example, but all the colors work the same. You use them by moving them side-to-side.

They’re not designed for vacuuming certain spots since you need to move it for it to work properly. If you try to keep it in one spot it may stop spinning.

Another alternative that we like is this mini head that’s made by another company. It works on the same principle - it has a brush roll that spins by air. However, it’s designed to fit almost any vacuum cleaner.

Unlike the Zipp brush you can press down on one tricky spot and it won’t stop spinning! Both brushes are great choices for cleaning, so you can pick the one that works best for you.

How To Use Rainbow Vacuum Wands

A common question from Rainbow vacuum owners is: “What is the correct way to use Rainbow wands?” Sometimes people are vacuuming and the wands falls off, or sometimes they have them in the wrong order. In this video, Dustin goes over how to use your Rainbow wands correctly!

There are two types of wand connections you may see in Rainbow vacuums - friction fit and button lock. The D3, D4, SE and SE Pan 2 models all use friction fit. You just take your wand, shove it in as far as it goes, and then twist to the right. It shouldn’t come off while your vacuuming, but if it does you probably haven’t twisted it hard enough. To remove it simply untwist!

The newer E style Rainbow vacuums use a button lock. The wands all just snap together. To release, just push the button and pull them apart. Fortunately, both style of wand will work on the E series machines!

You can use any of your tools, except the floor tool, without the wands. Floor tools need the wands to be attached in the correct order. You need to start with the curved wand that is at the end of the hose. If your hose didn’t come with it already attached, don’t worry! You can attach it my simply twisting and shoving at the same time.

Now attach the short, straight wand.

The attach the curved wand. You will notice that this wand has two bumps at one end.

Finally, attach the floor tool to the end with the bumps. Those bumps allow the floor tool to swivel. You're ready to vacuum!

How to Fix - Rainbow Head Won’t Turn On

One of the more common questions we get about Rainbow vacuums is: “Why won’t my head turn on?” People will vacuum fine one day, then the next day the head just won’t start. In this video we go over a few tricks to make sure your power head is working properly.

The first thing you should do is make sure your power head is getting electricity. Start by plugging the hose into the vacuum like you normally would.

Now make sure your hose is connected to the head properly.

If you were to turn on your vacuum now, the red indicator light on the power head should turn on. This lets you know it is receiving power.

If it’s still not working with all connections checked, press and hold the red reset button. If you vacuumed something up, like a sock, it may have tripped the reset switch to protect the motor. In most cases this will work.

If that doesn’t work and the red light is on, turn the vacuum off and unplug it. Then, flip the powerhead over. Remove the two screws on the bottom and then remove the bottom plate. Check for any loose wires that may have become disconnected and then make sure that your belt is firmly attached and that the brush roll can spin.

What if your red light never does turn on? Some of the newer models have a trigger in the handle and the power head only comes on when you press it. If you have it hooked up, plugged in, everything is on, AND you press the trigger and still nothing happens you know your power head isn’t getting power. You can troubleshoot this by disconnected the hose and then plugging the two-prong connector from the power head directly into the canister. If it turns on you know the problem is in the hose!

How To Clean A Water Separator On A Rainbow Vacuum Cleaner

Have you cleaned the water separator on your Rainbow Vacuum? Do you know how? We get asked this question a lot! Here’s a quick video that shows you how simple this routine maintenance is!

Unscrew the brass nut at the very bottom.

Now you can remove the water separator! You can take it over to the sink, grab a brush, and scrub all the nooks and crannies to get the dirt out. You can get by doing this about 2-3 times per year.

Wait, are you having trouble getting that nut off? Sometimes, after a while, it gets a bit stuck on there and you can’t remove it with just your fingers. If this is the case you’ll need to hold the water separator firmly with one hand and use a wrench or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the nut.

Once you have it apart go ahead and clean up the threads as well. You can use a little WD-40 when replacing the nut so that it will come off easier next time.

On occasion, when people are replacing the nut, it stops and they assume it’s tightened all the way. If the water separator can spin freely while the nut is held in place, then the nut has not been tightened enough! You want the water separator AND the nut to have to spin together. You also want to be careful not to over-tighten, as this can bind up the motor.
