My Kirby Won't Turn On! Safety Switches and Other Common Problems

Are you having trouble getting your Kirby vacuum to turn on? Today we go over a few common problems that may keep your Kirby from working the way it should.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Instructions

If your Kirby vacuum isn’t turning on, the first thing you’ll want to do is check the safety switches. We’ll start with the one behind the power nozzle.

Start by releasing the belt.

Now release the latch.

When you take the powerhead off, you’ll be able to see the safety switch.

When you put the head on, a small tab will press this safety switch. It should be sticking out about half an inch or so. If it looks short or has a jagged, broken edge, then you tab is probably broken and isn’t engaging the safety switch. The solution is to replace the power head and we can help you with that! Just email us at service@greatvacs.com with more details.

If your tab looks good, you’ll want to be sure you’re attaching the head properly. There is a bar on the vacuum and two hooks on the power head. These hooks will need to hook over the bar.

Raise the height of the vacuum all the way to make it easier, then attach the head.

Secure the latch and engage the belt. The power head should only have a slight, 1-2 mm gap. If yours looks like the one pictured above you should be good!

The next safety switch is by the bag. If you remove the bag, you’ll notice this tiny switch on the vacuum.

There is a tab on the bag that pushed the switch forward when attached properly.

For the bag to be attached properly it will need to be aligned on the three brass tabs.

Set the bag on the tabs and turn clockwise until you feel it lock into place.

If any of these tabs are broken the bag may not engage the switch. Also, if you notice the bag is popping back out of place too easily that could be a sign something is worn out and needs replaced.

If you’ve checked your safety switches and those all work and it’s STILL not turning on you should check the power cord. Unwind the cord and try wiggling it around as you attempt the turn the vacuum on. If the vacuum turns on at some point you likely have a short in the power cord. If that happens send us an email at service@greatvacs.com and we can help replace the cord.

Kirby bag falling off?

Does your Kirby bag keep falling off? Tired of your Kirby vacuum not turning on due to your bag? Well, in this video we will go over a few things that will help fix this problem. We will also show you the proper way to put your bag on.

If you take the bag off by twisting counter-clockwise you will notice a small switch.

This switch needs to be pushed forward to engage the safety switch. This happens when the bag is attached properly.

You will also notice a tab on the end of the bag. This is how your bag engages the safety switch!

To make sure you bag is attached properly, take note of the brass pins on the vacuum and the three slots at the end of your bag.

Line the bag up on the brass pins and twist clockwise to lock it in place.

Maybe you've noticed that your bag pops out of place too easily! That could be a sign of a worn out part somewhere in the bag area. If that’s the case go ahead and send us an email with more details. Send a picture of the inside of the bag area and the attachment area if possible.

How To Use Kirby Vacuum Tools

In this video, Dustin shows everyone how you’re supposed to use Kirby tools! With Kirby, there’s a tool for every job and they all work great.

Let’s start by reviewing each tool and what it does! Note: Dustin uses common industry names for some tools and they may not be Kirby’s official terms.

The first tool in the caddy is the hardwood floor tool. As the name suggests it works great on hardwood floors, tile, etc.

The next tool is the wall and ceiling tool. It can also be used on the floor and the tops of ceiling fans.

In the back are two extension wands.

And we also have a crevice tool.

Next to the crevice tool is the upholstery tool.

Then we have the duster brush.

The duster brush can be removed from this other tool we call the corner wand.

You’ll notice that the corner wand has a suction release valve. This is useful for when you need to vacuum delicate surfaces, like some fabrics, and your Kirby has too much power.

Next up is the shampooer.

Now we have a tool we call the handheld tool. This attaches to the Kirby vacuum and allows it to be more mobile. A common use is when you’re vacuuming a mattress.

Then we have another tool we’ve nicknamed Miss Piggy, because your vacuum looks like a pig when it's attached. You can put fragrances in here and it will make your house smell nice as you vacuum. You will also use this instead of the vacuum head if you’re using it to blow or inflate.

Speaking of blowing or inflating, here we have the blower/ inflator tool! You can dust your keyboard or inflate an air mattress with this.

Now we have the pet tool! If you’ve got one of those animals that holds still while you vacuum this works great to remove loose hair or fur. Oddly enough, it also matches the normal outside distance of a lightbulb, so you can hook it up to an extension wand and unscrew the lightbulb!

Finally, here is the foamer for your shampooer.

Now we’ll show you how to use them! The principle for attachment works the same for all tools and wands. They are friction fit, so you push and twist them together at the same time. The tool will not come off if it is done correctly. If it does come off you haven’t twisted it enough. To remove the tool or wand, just untwist.

Tools

  • Phillips head screwdriver

Instructions

As you can see, the handle is divided into two parts. Take the top portion and unscrew the screw.

Now you can take this top part and slide it into the bottom.

Now replace the screw you had just removed.

To attach the handle to the vacuum cleaner, all you need to do is insert it until you hear it click.

If you need to remove the handle, simply press this button in the back and you’ll be able to pull the handle out.

Now attach the cord to the hooks on the handle and wrap it around the cord keepers.

Next you’ll need to attach the bag. Slide the tab into the slot on the handle until it clicks.

All standard Kirby G models are assembled this way. Easy, right?
