How to Replace a Kirby Vacuum Hose End

Is your Kirby tool hose not attaching properly to the vacuum body? It may be due to a broken or worn out Hose End. Today we show you how to easily replace that old end piece.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Tools

  • Needle nose pliers

Instructions

The first thing you will want to do is inspect your hose end. Check the long tab that engages the safety switch, the two hooks, and the three slots inside. If any of those are damaged, you will need to replace your hose end.

To remove the old hose end take your needle nose pliers and grab the rubber lip on the inside.

Then twist to the side. This will create a gap.

Now, push the needle nose pliers further into the gap and twist more, until the rubber lip folds in on itself.

At this point you can take your other hand and press up on the hose end while you press the other direction with the pliers and they should come apart.

To get the new hose end on you will do the same thing. Take your needle nose pliers and twist the rubber part.

Hold the rubber piece with your hand and slide the new hose end over it.

Once it’s on you’ll notice that the rubber piece is still bent.

Simple take your finger and press it back out! You’re done!

My Rainbow won't turn on! Broken water bowl tabs and other common problems.

Are you having trouble getting your Rainbow E Series vacuum to turn on? Today we go over a few common problems that may keep your Rainbow from working the way it should.

Tools

  • A screwdriver

Instructions

This video works for ALL Rainbow E series vacuum cleaners!

The first thing you’ll want to do is take off your water bowl. To do this release the latches and lift off.

You’ll notice on the water bowl that there is a tab that sticks up about half an inch. The edges should all be nice and smooth, so if yours has any jagged edges it’s broken and you’ll have to replace your water bowl.

If that’s good and the rest of your water bowl looks good, including the areas where the latches fit, then your water bowl likely isn’t the problem.

Before putting the water bowl back on take a look at the latches. If those are cracked or broken in any way the water bowl probably isn’t getting latched tight enough which will also cause the vacuum to not turn on.

If you look underneath you will see a safety switch. This gets pressed by the water bowl when it’s latched in place. It has to be pressed for the vacuum to turn on!

So, let’s check this switch! You will need to be super careful, because the middle of the vacuum will spin very fast when you turn it on! Keep your hands and anything else clear of that whole area.

Plug your vacuum in, press the safety switch, and turn it on. If your vacuum turns on you know the safety switch is functioning so the problem is with the water bowl.

Once you’ve checked all of those parts, go ahead and reattach your water bowl and turn the vacuum on. If it turns on, then you’re all set. If it doesn’t send us an email at service@greatvacs.com and we can help.

If you have a Rainbow E Series Black you will notice that it has a red light on the front. If the red light turns on the vacuum won’t turn on. In this case there is probably a problem with the hose, wand, or power nozzle. Make sure the hose is plugged into the vacuum, the hose is plugged into the wands, and that the wands are plugged into the power head. If all the connections are clean, snug, and free of moisture you can check the bottom of your power nozzle. If the brush roll is clogged it will prevent the vacuum from turning on. If you check all of that and the vacuum still won't turn on, email us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help!

Replacing Latches on Any Rainbow E Series Vacuum Cleaner

Is your Rainbow vacuum cleaner not staying latched to your water bowl? Don't let a cheap part ruin your vacuuming experience. In this video, we will show you how easy it is to replace broken or worn out latches.

Tools

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Metal pick

Instructions

The first thing that you will need to do is remove these two plates. They are held on by two screws each.

We will start with the harder side first. This one has the safety switch behind it. You will need to be sure not to lose this tab!

Using your Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws.

As you pull the plate out, pay attention to the tab for the safety switch. You’ll need to remember where it goes since it almost always falls out.

The plastic tab looks like the picture above.

Now we are ready to remove the latch. If you look closely you’ll see a brass pin.

One end of the pin has splines and the other is smooth.

Take your metal pick or hook and press on the smooth end.

Once the pin has popped through the other side you can remove the latch. There will be a spring that goes with the latch as well.

Take the latch spring and bend the ends in toward each other.

This will make installation easier, because now you can put the spring on the latch mount and it will have tension to hold itself in place.

Take your new latch and line it up with the curved end pointing down. Be careful not to knock the spring out.

Now take the pin and slide it back in. There will still be a bit sticking out.

Take your flat head screwdriver and press the pin all the way in.

Now that the latch is installed, we’re ready to put the plate back in. Since this is the plate with the safety switch tab go ahead and grab it. The tab only goes in one way – the wings facing out. A trick to getting it to stay in place is to use a little petroleum jelly or grease!

Take your plate and line everything up. Then replace the screws.

Once that’s done press the safety switch to make sure it’s still working. Time to move on to the next plate!

The next plate is similar to the first. Start by removing the two screws. This one is easier since you don’t need to worry about any tabs or switches.

Then remove the plate.

Repeat the steps for replacing the latch as above.

Now you can line the plate up and slide it back into place.

Reinstall the two screws and you’re done!

How to Replace an E Series Rainbow HEPA Filter

This is a how-to-video on replacing the HEPA filter on any E Series Rainbow vacuum cleaner. In this video we show two different ways, both ways only take a few minutes.

Tools

  • Phillips head screwdriver (for older models)
  • Flat head screwdriver (for all models)

Newer Model Instructions

The vacuum we’re using in this demonstration is a Rainbow E series E2 Black. Since it is one of the newer models, we only need to flat head screwdriver to help pop the tabs open. If you look at the bottom, after you remove the wheel dolly, you’ll notice two tabs.

Insert your flat head screwdriver into the groove and pry up. Repeat with the other tab.

Once the back plate is loose, you can just remove it and set it aside.

Now remove the filter.

To put your new filter in you need to line the tab on the bottom up with the slot in the vacuum cleaner and it will set in place.

To put the filter cover on you’ll want to line up the tabs on the top with the holes on the vacuum and then snap the bottom back into place.

Older Model Instructions

Our older model for this demonstration is an E series 1 speed. The procedure for this is basically the same, except it uses screws to hold the filter cover in place. To get to the screws, you’ll need to remove this cord wrap piece.

Insert your flat head screwdriver into the groove on the side of the vacuum where it meets the cord wrap piece. Twist the screwdriver and the cord wrap will come off.

Use your Phillips head screwdriver and remove the four screws – two at the top and two at the bottom. Set these aside in a safe place.

Now remove the filter cover.

This gives you access to the HEPA filter. When you’re ready to install your new filter, you will need to orient it with the grill facing out and the tab in the slot at the bottom of the vacuum cleaner.

Place the back plate back on.

Replace the screws.

Finally, pop the cord wrap piece back on! You’re done!
