Answering Questions About HEPA Filters

HEPA filters are great, but how do you know when to clean, or even replace them? In this video, we answer 3 main questions about HEPA filters: When to clean, how to clean, and when to replace your filter.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always make sure your machine is unplugged and the power button is turned off, before servicing your vacuum.
  • Always make sure your hands are dry and free from moisture before servicing your machine.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when servicing your machine to prevent any cuts or scrapes.
  • If you are uncomfortable working on your vacuum, please don’t hesitate to contact us at service@greatvacs.com and we can help you through the process or you can send it into us to fix it for you.

Question #1: When do I need to clean my HEPA filter?

We recommend checking your filters once a month for regular use. If you are using your vacuum a lot more, you may need to bump that up to every two weeks. If you notice light dirt or dust on the surface of your HEPA filter, it’s a good time to clean it!

Question #2: How do I clean a HEPA filter?

You can vacuum the surface of the filter. If this isn’t enough you can run it under warm water and make sure you let it air dry completely before putting it back in the vacuum and using. We recommend having a backup filter on hand. That way you can still use your vacuum while the first filter is drying.

We also recommend blowing the HEPA filters out. You can use an air compressor or a can of air. This works well to get the dirt and dust out from deep in the grooves.

Question #3: When should I replace my HEPA filter?

With regular household use, we recommend replacing once a year. If you vacuum a lot more than average, you should replace them every 6 months. If you keep up with checking and cleaning your HEPA filter they will last a lot longer and you won’t spend nearly as much money replacing them.

Kirby Vacuum Bag Comparison HEPA 3M Aftermarket Difference

Have you ever wondered which Kirby bag was the best for your Kirby vacuum? Turns out you’re not alone! We get asked this question a lot! To see which bags were the best, we put them to the test!

How can you test a bag? Well, one great tool is an air flow meter! It’s basically a tube with a spring attached to a ball. We use these to determine how much suction power a vacuum cleaner has. Why would we use this to test which bag is the best? Well, oftentimes the more filtration you add the more power you lose. We will be looking for the best filtration with the least power loss.

Our first test is a Kirby vacuum with no bag. Result: almost a 6!

Our first bag is the Kirby paper HEPA bag and it scored a 5.

Our next bag is the white Kirby 3M HEPA bag. This one is the most expensive Kirby bag you can buy but is supposed to have better performance. This one scored a little bit better than a 5. This is probably because it has more surface area and also why the bag is more expensive.

Our third bag is a HEPA bag made by GV. Envirocare makes one that is nearly identical. It is white and made of the same material as the Kirby 3M bag we just saw. Our results: about 5.5!

If you’re concerned about the size difference between the Kirby 3M and the aftermarket, don’t be! The aftermarket bag is actually folded in at the sides and will expand.  The Kirby does not have this fold.

In conclusion – if you want to stay loyal to the Kirby brand go ahead and buy the genuine Kirby 3M bags. If you aren’t concerned with brand, the aftermarket bag is a great choice.

Transforming Your Kirby Vacuum into a Blowing/Inflating Machine

Kirby vacuums are well known for their suction power and durability! But did you know, you can use that same power, but have your Kirby be a great blowing/inflating machine? In this short video we will show how easy it is to transform it.

Instructions

The first thing you’ll want to do is twist the bag counterclockwise, which unlocks it from the vacuum.

Once that’s done you can disconnect the bag from the top of the vacuum and set it aside.

Now take you hose and if you look inside you’ll see three tabs.

Those tabs line up with the brass tabs on the vacuum.

Line the hose up, making sure that the two hooks are facing away from the vacuum cleaner, and set it on. You may want to twist it each direction to make sure it falls into place all the way.

Take the hose end and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.

You can also check the safety switch on the side of the vacuum. There’s a tab on the hose end that will engage the switch when it’s properly locked in.

You’re done! Now you can turn the Kirby vacuum on and use all of your blowing and inflating attachments!
